Health Considerations
For the majority of people massage is a beneficial experience and poses no health threats whatsoever. There are however a few circumstances in which massage may lead to a deterioration in a clients pre-existing medical condition.
If you are unsure as to whether or not you are well enough to receive a massage please consult GP
Prior to an initial massage all clients will complete a health screening questionnaire to ensure that massage can be safely and effectively carried out.
General illness
If you are feeling ill on the day of your massage please cancel your appointment. Massage will push any viruses such as colds or flu around your body making you feel even worse- and that’s the last thing that you want!
Strict contraindications
Clients who have or have had the following conditions within the last 6 months must not have massage:
Cancer
Massage encourages cell production and could therefore encourage the growth of cancerous cells.
Any heart condition
For example: A stroke, Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, Thrombosis. The mechanical force of a massage causes changes to the clients internal environment. Those with a weakened cardiac system or a tendency to form blood clots may not be able to adjust to the changes and their internal structures may become weakened or blocked.
Mulitple Sclerosis
Symptoms may be exacerbated by heat. Over stimulation during remission may result in painful and uncontrolled muscle spasms.
Severe Diabetes
Massage should be avoided in cases where clients have tissue damage and the potential to develop ulcers. For those with mild diabetes, double check with your GP. It has been suggested that massage causes an increase in the production of insulin so be sure to check your blood glucose levels post-massage.
If you are unsure as to whether you are well enough to receive massage please consult your GP.
Minor Conditions
Many minor conditions exist on localised areas of the body that may be harmed if massaged. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to avoid massage on other areas of the body.
Initial stage of fracture/ sprain / strain
Massage will interrupt the healing process. In the later stages of healing massage will help to prevent swelling.
Shingles
During the acute stage massage will be too painful.
Contagious skin disorders
For example: Boils, fungal infections, warts Massage could spread the infection further around the body- and to the therapist!
Other skin disorders
For example: Eczema/ Dermatitis, Acne The massage oil could worsen the condition.
Inflammation or swelling of an area
There may be underlying factors that are causing the symptoms that the therapist is unaware of.
Consult GP before booking massage.
Bruises
Be sure to mention any bruises to the therapist. Massage will increase blood flow to the bruise and make it bigger.
Burns / cuts
Massage would be painful to the affected area and also increase the risk of infection.
Varicous veins
The pressure of a massage could worsen the veins and be uncomfortable for the client.
Pregnancy
Gentle neck and shoulder massage is safe throughout the preganancy.
If you are unsure of any condition please consult your GP.
